LAY, ROCKABY, QUAD, WHAT WHERE, and ...but the clouds..., show Beckett confronting the traditional notion of actor, text, and performance, creating works that rely on physical imagery as much as spoken language to convey their meaning, experimenting with electronic media, and in the process re-thinking the role of the actor. Sometimes telling a story, sometimes reciting lines of verse, the actor in these pieces is always a vehicle for the playwright. The strongest actor is Beckett himself. In these plays he has created poetry in the shape of drama. |
